Release
of SOBA Framework 1.0 ß
The framework can be downloaded from the website of the Internet Community
Pioneers with Open-Development, a specified nonprofit organization (application
submitted).
From Open Source to Open Process
The SOBA project is a corporate-academic joint project continuing until
March 2005. This is an unprecedented attempt to allow groups from different
backgrounds to cooperate in developing open-source software. Although
there are a number of restrictions, our goal is an open development process
in which users, external developers, etc., can participate as much as
possible in improving the framework and adding features. We also hope
to achieve close cooperation with other open-source communities such as
Linux. We look forward to your participation!

Although
SOBA Framework 1.0 ß was due to be released at the end of March,
we had to extend this date to April 15th in order to provide a product
of even higher quality. We apologize to those who have eagerly awaited
this new release.

We
plan to make SOBA Framework 1.0 ß downloadable from a non-profit
organization (NPO) site based on a general public license (GPL). The target
group of this latest release of Framework 1.0 ß consists of users
who already have a certain amount of technical knowledge, but the Framework
2.0 ß to be released in August or September of this year will be
aimed toward a wider range of general users.
We
also plan to release TECOAS Version 0.1 on April 25th, a system based
on Framework 1.0 ß to support the joint creation of documents.

The
SOBA R&D project was selected for the "100 Million Yen Annual Scale" category
of the Scientific and Technical Promotion Adjustment Funds program of
Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
This refers to the first year of a 3-year business plan.

The
Web site of Mainichi Shimbun carried an article
which stated that the SOBA Project Secretariat "is not interested in working
together with American companies," but this does not reflect our intent.
This erroneous information was corrected in a subsequent article.
